Bad Idea Fairy

I have a Bad Idea Fairy that lives on my shoulder and talks to me. All the conversations start with “Wouldn’t it be funny if….”. I am a mostly rationale adult and I edit out these impulses many times a week. Because people have rules and laws and sensibilities and anything I would be doing was going to offend most of those. I thought I would tell you one of my favorite Bad Idea Fairy stories.

I worked at one of the biggest computer companies in the world as an engineering manager at that time. When we started using video conferencing, we would have the video going while we took a break, and all it showed was an empty conference room. The Bad Idea Fairy said “wouldn’t it be funny if….” I made puppets that looked kind of like my coworkers and held them up to the video during break time and made them play out their feelings. Like Space Balls where he is playing with dolls and did the whole “I hate you and yet I find you strangely attractive”. Word got around and I had a bit of a fan club for a while. Management found out. And then there were layoffs. Management; no sense of humor.
